April is here – Hello Spring!
Now the clocks have changed, and the days are getting longer, more time to spend in the garden!
Our top jobs for the month include…
In the fruit & veg garden
Carry on planting your veg bulbs
Continue planting batches of garlic, shallots and onions every few weeks to extend the cropping period.
Sow some of your veg seeds now
Sow outdoor varieties of tomatoes, chillies and courgettes in pots, so they’re ready to plant out in late May or June.
Create a herb container
Sow herbs such as parsley, coriander, dill and chamomile in a sunny bed or container
In the flower garden
Add a splash of colour in your garden
Enjoy Instant colour by planting your primulas and polyanthus in pots and at the front of your borders
Continue deadheading spring bulbs and bedding
This is so they don’t waste energy setting seed.
Prune your hydrangeas
Cut back the old stems to a healthy shoot lower down.
In and around the garden
Maintain the problem weeds
Ensure problem weeds such as nettles and brambles, are treated accordingly.
Keep your turf happy
Remove moss and weeds in turf, and boost growth with a nitrogen-rich lawn feed.
Get your garden prepared for April showers
Check that guttering on sheds and greenhouses is clear of debris, so that April showers will fill up water butts.
