This month we can hopefully expect warmer temperatures and more sunlight. Flowers are blooming, but the weeds are also coming up from nowhere! Keep on top of them!

Here are some other top gardening jobs for this month…

In the veg garden

Cut back herbs to encourage new tasty leaves which can be harvested in time before the frost

Cutting back your herbs now will allow you to continue to harvest healthy & fresh leaves right up until autumn.

Protect any fruit starting to develop by placing netting around the plants

Use netting to protect your fruit bushes from birds and small animals. This can help to prolong the life of your produce and protect them from pests and diseases.

Netting is available either loose to wrap around the plants or by using canes, or by using ready made fruit cages.

Don’t forget to feed your tomato plants!

Continue to feed tomato plants and pinch out the top of the plant to encourage growth into the fruit that has already formed. Ideally leave 5 or 6 trusses of fruit per plant.

In the flower garden

Deadhead flowering plants regularly

This ensures your flowers are kept neat and fresh while also encouraging new growth.

Trim lavender

Once your lavender has finished flowering, don’t forget to trim it down in order to maintain a compact bushy shape.

Summer prune wisteria

Cut back long side shoots to about 20cm. This allows better air circulation and more sunlight to reach the base of the young growths.

In and around the garden

Keep on top of weeding, as weeds will compete for water and nutrients

Don’t let these pesky growths ruin your garden! If Weeds are left too long, they will multiply so ensure you weed your garden regularly.

Keep you lawn looking healthy this summer

During spells of hot weather, raise the cutting height on your lawn mower to leave the grass higher. This is important as lawn growth slows down towards the end of summer.

Make sure you keep your garden hydrated

Water is vital for the growth and development of plants so its important to keep them watered so they remain healthy.
