Hello May!
The days are hopefully getting warmer!
Our top jobs for the month include…
In the fruit & veg garden
Earth up your potatoes
Make sure to go over the shoots with soil whenever they appear.
Maintain your rhubarb
Pick rhubarb as they develop, and water plants with liquid feed.
Remove all strawberry runners
This is so your plants can put their full energy into fruiting.
In the flower garden
Plant your summer bedding and tender annuals
Bedding and tender annual plants such as sunflowers, cosmos and nasturtiums can be planted after the last frost occurs.
Prepare your spring bulbs for next year
Apply liquid feed to tulips, daffodils and other spring bulbs to encourage a good display next year.
Tie in the new shoots on your climbing plants
Including clematis, wisteria and honeysuckle, to their supports.
In and around the garden
Watch out for aphids
Shoot tips and young foliage are prone to aphids so make sure to wipe them off or spray with a soap-based solution.
Keep your grass happy
Apply nitrogen-rich summer lawn feed to encourage leafy growth.
Clean your bird feeders
Clean out and scrub your bird feeders regularly in order to maintain hygiene.
